What Is Poverty

POVERTY

Poverty is defined as a state or circumstance in which an individual or group lacks the financial means and necessities for a basic quality of living. Poverty is defined as having an income level from employment that is so low that fundamental human needs cannot be satisfied. Poverty-stricken individuals and families may be deprived of adequate shelter, safe drinking water, nutritious food, and medical care. Each country may have its own criterion for determining how many of its citizens are poor.

What Are the Root Causes of Poverty?

1.LOW PAYMENT

Seventy-five percent of poor children have at least one working parent. The long-term worsening of job conditions for employees in the lowest-paid 20% of South Africa's labor market has been a key source of lasting poverty in the country. Low salaries, high childcare costs, and part-time work all conspire to lower incomes. Many low-wage positions do not provide possibilities for advancement to higher-paying employment. Others are unstable, with erratic hours and pay.

2.  UNEMPLOYMENT

Since the adoption of Covid 19, the number of persons shifting between work and unemployment has increased by 34.4 percent. 66% of children in households with no working adults are poor. People who are unemployed overwhelmingly desire to work but encounter difficulties to doing so. These are mostly illness and childcare, but they also include caring obligations for family members.

What do you think could also be the cause of poverty in our country, South Africa?

Comments

  1. I agree with the article that unemployment is the major cause of poverty and with South Africa having the highest unemployment rate of 75% amongst the youth the situation gets worse as the government cannot incorporate the youth into the working environment

  2. Lack of education, thinking, independence are the contributing factors to poverty and ignorance, plus the corruption of government and mismanagement of funds.

  3. I agree with the article...
In addition poverty is the state of having little or no money ...having no material(s)

  4. Unemployment is almost the cause of everything because it even causes the increase in crime rate, and poverty is a challenge to many people as they have low standard of living

  5. Lack of access to verious alternative methods of education. For example, our youth may not be exposed to the benefits of becoming an artisan more than they are exposed to the benefits of a corporate job. Also work for people with disabilities that are considered severe such as quadriplegia or people with intellectual disabilities is also scarce
